One free second.

Clock

Did you hear the big news? At the end of December, we're getting a free second! It's just like Daylight Savings except about 3600 times smaller. On December 31st at midnight, the final minute of 2005 will be 61 seconds long. Apparently our Earth's rotation ain't perfect, so we have to compensate for it.

Here's how it will go at the end of this year:

2005 December 31 23h 59m 58s
2005 December 31 23h 59m 59s
2005 December 31 23h 59m 60s
2006 January 01 00h 00m 00s
2006 January 01 00h 00m 01s
If you want to read more about it, click here. So, what are you going to do with the extra time?

You mean to tell me that every year is increasing by a second?? Is this because we are launching too much stuff into orbit, there by reducing the angular momentum of our planet? Oy vey.

It appears as though I will be resetting my clocks with that extra time.

No way...that is too neat. I wonder how many people on New Year's Eve will be saying "Happy New Year" a second too early?
